GENE AUTRY (1907–1998) Known as “The Singing Cowboy,” Gene Autry was one of America’s most beloved entertainers of the 20th century. Beginning his career as a radio performer in the early 1930s, Autry became a pioneering figure in country and western music, recording hit songs such as “Back in the Saddle Again” and the holiday classic “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”
