Notes Music Of Israel/Festival Of Songs

Starting in 1961 an annual competition was held to pick out the best songs written by new artists. The committee of judges reviewed the new material not knowing the names of the writers. This became known as the Festival Of Songs. After the ten best were chosen by the judges, the winning songs were picked by the audience at the festival after each song was sung twice by different performers. The Festival was held in 1961 and 1962. No songs were chosen in 1963 but the Festival continued in 1964. All of the accompanying music at the Festivals was played by the Israel Light Orchestra. There are 4 selections on this program:

1) Erev Bar, Evening Has Come, was winner of best song of 1961. It was sung by Elisa Kashi and Shimon Bar. The song was composed by Ari Levanon and the lyrics were written by Odet Avisar. 1:37 - 4:01

2) Dance With Me was the winner in 1962 and is sung by Idan Singer. 4:39 - 6:39

3) Na'ama (name of a girl) came in second place in 1962 and is sung by Esther Reichstadt. 7:10 - 10:19

4) Ba'rim Chinuk Lu, Things Which Mean Nothing, is sung by Shimon Bar and took second place in 1964. 11:00 - 13:13
