Notes The Nahal Settlement of Beit Sha'an

Nahal has the dual function of defending borders and working the soil. Some members might split off from a group and establish a new settlement, which was done in the case of the one at Beit Sha'an. Interviews take place with some of the new settlers. One interviewee, who happened to be from Ireland, discusses what the plantings were, like potatoes, artichokes, tomatoes and cotton. Another interviewee is a woman who works in the mess hall and she discusses her workday. She is also a member of the Mahal, volunteers to the Israeli army from abroad who serve on Kibbutzim. Another volunteer, who happened to be from the United States, spoke of his wanting to join the Army, which he did through Mahal. He spoke of his basic training which was extremely difficult, but necessary. Since this settlement was a religious one, a visit to the Synagogue occurred. All in all, those who spoke said that although life migh t be a little bit more difficult on one of these new settlements, it was all quite worthwhile.
