Notes | The John F. Kennedy Memorial and Peace Forest On July 4, 1966 The John F. Kennedy Memorial and Peace Forest located just outside of Jerusalem was dedicated. The Jerusalem Children's Band played "The Fanfare" at the opening of the ceremony which was attended by internationally known speakers and guests. The guest of honor was The Chief Justice of the United States, Earl Warren, who brought and read a message from President Johnson. The Memorial symbolizes the fallen president as a sculptured building that looked like base of a tree that had been cut in its prime. This circular, otherwise empty, building held only an eternal flame. Surrounding the monument is the beginning of a forest called the John F. Kennedy Peace Forest. Since the dedication almost 3 million tress had been planted by visitors from all over the world. In December of 1966 in a part of the forest especially set aside, Senator Edward Kennedy planted a tree in honor of his brother. Other visitors, known and unknown, paid their respects with their words and prayers. 1:00-1:45 |
