Now you can celebrate the 4th of July and your Jewish heritage at the same time.<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This new compilation of songs from the Judaica Sound Archives<\/strong> at Florida Atlantic University Libraries in Boca Raton, FL is about the American Jewish experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It contains  Yiddish songs recorded during the early 20th century and expresses a Jewish immigrant perspective on New York, Coney Island and other things distinctly American.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You will also hear American patriotic songs sung by Jewish performers, Mike Burstyn singing about America in Hebrew and, from FAU’s Recorded Sound Archives<\/a> Vintage 78s Collection<\/em><\/a>, a very young Frank Sinatra singing \u201cAmerica the Beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. My America’s Free:<\/strong><\/em> Written byJerome Lipman and Irving Lewis. Sung by Molly Picon<\/a> and Seymour Rechtzeit<\/a> with the Abraham Ellstein Orchestra and Dave Tarras on clarinet. This upbeat tune lists some of the many things to love about America\u2026..especially freedom!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Ich Dank dir Got fur America<\/strong><\/em>: Sung by Leibele Waldman<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. America:<\/strong><\/em> Sung by Yiddish Theater star, Josef Feldman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Yankee Doodle:<\/strong><\/em> This well-known Anglo-American song from the revolutionary War era is sung by Jewish singer\/educator, Judy Caplan Ginsburgh<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. I’m Going to Miami:<\/strong><\/em> Benny Bell<\/a> tells a story of his trip to Miami Beach, Florida by train.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Hot Dogs and Knishes<\/strong><\/em>: Aaron Lebedeff<\/a> sings this comic Yiddish song about Coney Island, NY.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Hurray far NY:<\/strong><\/em> This recording is from a 1967 recording of Pesach Burstein<\/a>\u2019s Yiddish Theater performance from \u201cThe Vilna Komiker.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. America Ich Lieb Dich (America I Love You):<\/strong> Sung by Yiddish Theater star, Gus Goldstein<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. Ragtime Fiddle:<\/em><\/strong> Written by Irving Berlin and sung by Simon Paskal<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10. Carry Me Back to Old Virginny:<\/strong><\/em> Originally a song sung by Confederate soldiers during the Civil War, it was recast in 1878 from the slave’s perspective. This 1916 recording by Jewish opera star, Alma Gluck<\/a>, is said to have been the first operatic celebrity recording to ever sell a million copies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

11. Tell That to the Marines:<\/strong><\/em> Written during WWI,  sung by Al Jolson<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

12. God Bless the USA:<\/strong><\/em> This recordingis from the Judy Caplan Ginsburgh album, Musical America<\/em><\/a>. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

13. America America:<\/strong><\/em> Mike Burstyn<\/a>\u2019s tribute to the land of his birth sung in Hebrew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
